Job Description
The Chief Financial Officer role at The Charity CFO, LLC supports day-to-day operations for a 7 to 8 person accounting team while delivering accounting and advisory services to nonprofit clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead team staff meetings and training.
- Run weekly one-on-one check-ins with all team members.
- Answer team questions and remove roadblocks by proactively tracking team-wide tasks, projects, and upcoming deadlines.
- Ensure effective client communication; step in to answer client questions and de-escalate concerns when necessary.
- Plan for PTO and other absences to keep client deliverables on track.
- Review KPIs, including deadlines met, responsiveness to email correspondence, and client profitability.
- When KPIs are off track, take ownership and work proactively to get back on schedule.
- Perform a monthly evaluation of team members with direct, actionable feedback to support accountability and long-term growth.
- Evaluate staff capacity and skill to determine client responsibility assignments.
- Interview candidates for open positions.
- Onboard new employees and support a successful transition.
- Facilitate training workshops for new hires.
- Support team engagement through team events and activities.
- Participate in firm leadership activities and “face of the firm” events as assigned.
- Support ongoing professional development and continued education.
- Fill in for team member absences as needed.
- Review and analyze monthly financial reports for assigned clients to assess each organization’s financial health.
- Support clients with annual budgets, cash flow forecasts, and other financial analyses.
- Present financial report presentations to client leadership and boards of directors.
- Periodically check in with clients to assess satisfaction, address issues, and strengthen long-term relationships.
- Participate in new client onboarding meetings to understand unique needs and help build customized accounting processes.
- Manage client expectations and scope of services to ensure needs are met.
- Participate in internal “desk review” debrief meetings to identify improvement areas and create a plan to clean up accounting issues.
- Ensure appropriate accounting processes are maintained for assigned clients and proactively revise processes as necessary.
- Prepare and present an annual custom assessment of each client’s financial health using the proprietary Nonprofit Blueprint model.
- Communicate annual fee increases with assigned clients.
- Serve as a CFO and strategic advisor for assigned clients by answering accounting questions and proactively communicating when accounting problems are identified.
What Success Looks Like (First 6 Months)
- Complete bookkeeping tasks, including processing bills, recording revenue and expense transactions, and posting payroll entries.
- Conduct month-end close procedures, including reconciliations, allocation entries, and preparation of monthly financial reports.
- Track spend-down of clients’ restricted grants and review new client grant agreements for proper accounting and tracking, including compliance considerations that may impact accounting processes.
- Review client financial reports prepared by other team members for accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
- Review client financial statements to ensure they are accurate and audit-ready ahead of financial statement audits.
- Act as a liaison with client auditors to ensure timely delivery of requested documentation and support audit timelines.
- Complete end-of-year reviews of client financial statements prior to preparation of annual Form 990 returns.
- Facilitate the annual 1099 filing process for assigned clients.
- Support client-related projects such as building workpapers, investigating accounting discrepancies, completing chart of account revisions, and performing cash-to-accrual basis conversions.

- Analyze financial statements and present key takeaways to stakeholders.
- Prepare budgets and forecasts for clients.
- Manage the team to ensure client needs are met and deliverables remain consistently on time.
- Maintain accounting processes to support quality and meet clients’ unique needs.
- Problem solve with clients using strategic advisory support and solutions for complex accounting situations.
- Maintain client relationships for long-term satisfaction and retention.
- Represent The Charity CFO externally and internally as an ambassador.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s in Accounting or an Accounting-related field
- 3 to 5 years of experience in full-cycle accounting or public accounting as an auditor or outsourced accountant
- 1 to 2 years of nonprofit accounting experience (preferred)
- 2 to 4 years of successfully building and managing a team
- CPA license (preferred)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Proficiency with accounting software
- Excellent critical thinking skills
- Advanced accounting knowledge
