Chief Legal and Financial Officer
Job Description
CommuniCare Michigan LLC is seeking a Chief Legal and Financial Officer to lead legal case oversight alongside core financial management responsibilities. The role combines legal coordination and risk management with budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and strategic planning to support long-term organizational sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and monitor ongoing legal matters, including litigation, claims, and disputes involving the organization.
- Act as the primary internal liaison for outside legal counsel, insurance representatives, and other relevant external parties.
- Maintain organized records of legal cases, including deadlines, correspondence, filings, and related expenses.
- Support legal research, document review, case preparation, and the collection of records and information.
- Track the status and financial implications of pending or potential legal claims and provide updates to executive leadership.
- Review business contracts, agreements, policies, and other organizational documents, including legal review and approval where required.
- Identify legal, contractual, regulatory, and operational risks and recommend approaches to reduce exposure.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding litigation, employee matters, business records, and other sensitive information.
- Oversee organizational financial operations and develop strategies to support long-term financial stability and sustainable growth.
- Advise executive leadership on financial performance, business risks, resource allocation, and strategic opportunities.
- Develop and monitor annual budgets, financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and broader financial plans.
- Analyze revenue, expenses, operating costs, and financial trends to identify improvement opportunities.
- Assess the financial impact of legal claims, settlements, insurance matters, contracts, and other business decisions.
- Prepare and present financial reports and recommendations to executive leadership.
- Establish financial policies, internal controls, and accountability measures to safeguard organizational resources.
- Oversee accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial obligations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Oversee budget development and expense monitoring across departments, programs, and locations.
- Coordinate with external accountants, tax professionals, auditors, financial institutions, and other business partners.
- Review payroll-related expenses, employee compensation costs, benefits expenditures, and other significant operating expenses.
- Evaluate accounting systems and financial procedures to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting.
- Support financial planning for staffing, facilities, insurance, equipment, and organizational growth.
- Monitor applicable financial, contractual, and regulatory requirements impacting the organization and coordinate compliance-related activities.
- Collaborate with executive leadership and department managers to evaluate financial performance and operational efficiency.
- Assess financial impacts of changes in healthcare regulations, reimbursement arrangements, contractual obligations, and service delivery models.
- Develop processes to improve recordkeeping, internal controls, risk identification, and organizational accountability.
- Support leadership in evaluating business opportunities, negotiating commercial terms, and assessing financial and legal considerations for organizational initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Michigan is strongly preferred.
- Law school graduates who have not yet passed the bar examination will also be considered.
- Experience demonstrating legal research, document management, contract review, case coordination, or litigation support.
- Experience in financial management, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, or business operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret legal and financial information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple cases, deadlines, financial priorities, and projects simultaneously.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and familiarity with financial management and document management systems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, outside counsel, accountants, insurers, and operational teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Michigan law license and experience managing business-related legal matters.
- MBA, CPA, CMA, or other relevant business or financial credential.
- Experience with commercial litigation, insurance claims, employment matters, contract disputes, or corporate risk management.
- Experience in healthcare, rehabilitation services, behavioral health, or another regulated industry.
- Experience overseeing financial operations for a multi-location organization.
- Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement, insurance-based revenue models, and third-party payer arrangements.
- Experience evaluating legal expenses, litigation exposure, insurance coverage, and settlement considerations.
- Experience developing financial policies, internal controls, and operational improvement initiatives.
Education
- Juris Doctor (J.D.)
- MBA, degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent formal education in business finance is strongly preferred.

Work Location and Environment
This is a full-time executive-level position supporting CommuniCare’s operations across its Michigan locations. The role is onsite in Troy, MI, and travel between locations may be required, along with occasional additional hours to address time-sensitive legal or financial matters.
