Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer will lead SALA's financial operations, supervise accounting staff, strengthen internal controls, ensure GAAP and funder compliance, and advise the Executive Director, Audit/Finance Committee, and Board as a key member of the management team.

Responsibilities

  • Steer the design, analysis, and ongoing operation of SALA's accounting and financial management systems, including accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Establish and maintain GAAP-compliant practices and procedures, incorporating the Accounting Guide for LSC Recipients, LSC regulations, 2 CFR Part 200 (Uniform Guidance), and funder requirements.
  • Oversee the security, reliability, and modernization of SALA's accounting and financial software and related systems.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets, preserve financial integrity, deter fraud, and meet legal, regulatory, and grant obligations.
  • Advise the Executive Director on fiscal policy, long-range planning, sustainability strategies, and practical solutions to financial challenges.
  • Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets with the management team for presentation to the Audit/Finance Committee and Board.
  • Prepare and present financial statements, budget analyses, cash flow insights, forecasts, and projections to the Executive Director, Audit/Finance Committee, and Board.
  • Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial assets; supervise all Finance Department transactions including purchasing, AP, AR, payroll, cash receipts, journal entries, and bank reconciliations.
  • Oversee grant accounting, restricted funds, cost allocation, reporting, and expenditure monitoring to ensure compliance with budgets, grant terms, LSC requirements, and Uniform Guidance.
  • Develop and refine cost allocation methodologies to ensure appropriate charging of expenses across funding sources and activities.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable accounting standards, financial regulations, grant reporting, and overall compliance.
  • Prepare, review, or supervise grant financial reports, reimbursements, billings, and other funder submissions.
  • Support the Executive Director and program staff with budgets and financial analyses for funding applications and grant proposals.
  • Provide staff guidance and strategic financial input to the Audit/Finance Committee and Board as needed.
  • Ensure procurement, property management, inventory control, asset tracking, depreciation, and disposition comply with funder and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee SALA's asset inventory and related compliance across the organization.
  • Direct and coordinate SALA's annual financial audit and other reviews, serving as the management liaison to external auditors, assisting with auditor selection, preparing schedules, participating in exit conferences, and ensuring timely audited statements and reports; implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Identify, assess, and report significant financial, operational, compliance, and grant-related risks to the Executive Director and Audit/Finance Committee, proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee information security for financial data, records retention, cybersecurity controls, and disaster recovery planning for financial operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including at least three years in a senior financial leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing finances for nonprofit, governmental, or federally funded organizations.
  • Hands-on experience with federal grants, restricted funding, grant compliance, and financial reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, internal controls, budgeting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience supervising accounting and finance personnel.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills appropriate for an executive management position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Five years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including at least three years in a senior financial leadership position
  • Experience managing nonprofit, governmental, or federally funded organizational finances
  • Experience with federal grants, restricted funding, grant compliance, and financial reporting
  • Knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, internal controls, budgeting, and financial analysis

  • Leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills suitable for executive management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential
  • Experience with Legal Services Corporation regulations, grants, and reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of 2 CFR Part 200 (Uniform Guidance)
  • Experience working with nonprofit boards of directors and audit/finance committees
  • Background in legal aid, public interest law, or other nonprofit organizations receiving federal funding
  • Experience implementing financial management software systems and financial cybersecurity controls

Compensation

Salary range $90,000-$120,000 DOE. SALA will pay up to $3,000 to support relocation to Arizona. Up to 5% additional compensation for language fluency. Excellent benefits, including health insurance, pension plan, and generous leave.
