Job Description
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch oversees the organization’s financial operations, guides the executive team, and supports financial health and long-term stability. This hybrid role is based in Billings, MT.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all financial aspects of the organization, providing strategic guidance to the executive team and ensuring ongoing financial health and stability.
- Provide leadership and supervision for the accounting department, including planning and directing work, assigning duties, and maintaining adherence to work schedules.
- Manage staffing activities, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training employees.
- Conduct staff evaluations, support job performance management through coaching or counseling, and apply corrective action when necessary.
- Ensure appropriate training and education programs are available for staff.
- Schedule and lead regular staff meetings.
- Direct team performance toward organizational goals, including appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving operational issues.
- Manage financial resources and make decisions that support the organization’s growth.
- Oversee budget and financial planning, including annual operating and capital budget preparation.
- Prepare financial reports for the CEO and the Board of Directors.
- Assure annual audits are completed in line with established board and contract due dates.
- Advise ELC and the Board on laws and reporting requirements related to the organization’s financial operations.
- Review and update financial policies and procedures annually.
- Oversee employee benefit plans with an emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package.
- Maintain appropriate property and liability insurance coverage.
- Maintain speed and accuracy of billing and client payments.
- Support strategic goals and outcomes through individual, departmental, and organizational goal development and achievement.
- Participate in Performance Quality Improvement (PQI) goals both individually and as a team member.
- Model the mission and values of YBGR and adhere to organizational policies, systems, safety requirements, and procedures.
- Identify problems proactively and pursue solutions.
- Represent the organization professionally to external contacts.
- Participate in monthly supervision and coaching meetings with the supervisor.
- Be aware of the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of persons served.
- Participate in required training as appropriate to the position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be 21 years old or older.
- Must pass a Criminal / Child Abuse Clearance background check as required by the State of Montana.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
- 10 years of professional work experience in a leadership role in Behavioral Healthcare or Public Accounting, including Healthcare Financial Management experience with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership or executive capacity.
- Experience upgrading legacy financial architectures and ability to align technology investments with corporate strategy.
- Experience supervising and mentoring an accounting team of five or more professionals, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with financial reporting standards.
- Ability to partner with the CEO and executive team to support long-term business planning.
- Experience overseeing finance and accounting departments to ensure accurate preparation of income statements, balance sheets, and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to monitor liquidity, direct budget processes, and build financial forecasts to support daily operations and future expansion.
- Ability to identify and mitigate financial, legal, and operational risks through financial controls and contingency plans.
- Exceptional data analysis and negotiation skills, with executive-level communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to lead and inspire the accounting team, set strategic direction, and drive organizational change.
- Ability to identify challenges within financial operations, analyze root causes, and implement solutions to improve efficiency and quality.
- Experience managing nursing resources, including staffing, budgets, equipment, and supplies, to support optimal utilization and quality outcomes.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and policies governing financial practices and ensuring compliance.
- Self-motivated, self-disciplined, and diligent with forward thinking.
- Ability to define success collectively and put the team over self.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with others.
Compensation and Work Location
- Salary: USD 120,000 - 150,000 per year
- Location: Billings, MT (hybrid)
