Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch oversees the organization’s financial operations, guides the executive team, and supports financial health and long-term stability. This hybrid role is based in Billings, MT.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all financial aspects of the organization, providing strategic guidance to the executive team and ensuring ongoing financial health and stability.
Provide leadership and supervision for the accounting department, including planning and directing work, assigning duties, and maintaining adherence to work schedules.
Manage staffing activities, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training employees.
Conduct staff evaluations, support job performance management through coaching or counseling, and apply corrective action when necessary.
Ensure appropriate training and education programs are available for staff.
Schedule and lead regular staff meetings.
Direct team performance toward organizational goals, including appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving operational issues.
Manage financial resources and make decisions that support the organization’s growth.
Oversee budget and financial planning, including annual operating and capital budget preparation.
Prepare financial reports for the CEO and the Board of Directors.
Assure annual audits are completed in line with established board and contract due dates.
Advise ELC and the Board on laws and reporting requirements related to the organization’s financial operations.
Review and update financial policies and procedures annually.
Oversee employee benefit plans with an emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package.
Maintain appropriate property and liability insurance coverage.
Maintain speed and accuracy of billing and client payments.
Support strategic goals and outcomes through individual, departmental, and organizational goal development and achievement.
Participate in Performance Quality Improvement (PQI) goals both individually and as a team member.
Model the mission and values of YBGR and adhere to organizational policies, systems, safety requirements, and procedures.
Identify problems proactively and pursue solutions.
Represent the organization professionally to external contacts.
Participate in monthly supervision and coaching meetings with the supervisor.
Be aware of the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of persons served.
Participate in required training as appropriate to the position.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Must be 21 years old or older.
Must pass a Criminal / Child Abuse Clearance background check as required by the State of Montana.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
10 years of professional work experience in a leadership role in Behavioral Healthcare or Public Accounting, including Healthcare Financial Management experience with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership or executive capacity.
Experience upgrading legacy financial architectures and ability to align technology investments with corporate strategy.
Experience supervising and mentoring an accounting team of five or more professionals, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with financial reporting standards.
Ability to partner with the CEO and executive team to support long-term business planning.
Experience overseeing finance and accounting departments to ensure accurate preparation of income statements, balance sheets, and regulatory compliance.
Ability to monitor liquidity, direct budget processes, and build financial forecasts to support daily operations and future expansion.
Ability to identify and mitigate financial, legal, and operational risks through financial controls and contingency plans.
Exceptional data analysis and negotiation skills, with executive-level communication and leadership abilities.
Ability to lead and inspire the accounting team, set strategic direction, and drive organizational change.
Ability to identify challenges within financial operations, analyze root causes, and implement solutions to improve efficiency and quality.
Experience managing nursing resources, including staffing, budgets, equipment, and supplies, to support optimal utilization and quality outcomes.
Knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and policies governing financial practices and ensuring compliance.
Self-motivated, self-disciplined, and diligent with forward thinking.
Ability to define success collectively and put the team over self.
Ability to effectively interact and communicate with others.

Compensation and Work Location

Salary: USD 120,000 - 150,000 per year

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Lead the monthly close and prepare or direct the creation of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and supporting schedules

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university with concentration in business or administration and an accounting major or minor, including coursework in financial analysis and auditing
Five years of accounting experience
