Job Description
Gather, a nonprofit organization based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is seeking a part-time Director of Finance and Human Resources to oversee the organization’s fiscal management and people operations. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role blends financial stewardship with HR administration, supporting strategic planning while working onsite in Portsmouth for roughly 25 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting and reporting activities, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance to ensure accuracy and adherence to GAAP.
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director, monitor progress, and deliver reports to keep leadership informed of the financial status.
- Manage cash flow, forecasting, and banking relationships to maintain liquidity and financial stability.
- Track grant expenditures, ensure compliance with restricted funding, and provide financial reporting to donors.
- Coordinate the annual audit process and work with the auditor to prepare IRS Form 990.
- Direct the annual renewal of all company insurance policies (health, dental, vision, short-term disability, general liability, property, workers’ compensation) and maintain comprehensive records of policies, contracts, and agreements.
- Prepare financial reports and analyses, including quarterly updates on Gather’s 1816 Legacy Endowment, and present findings to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Supervise HR and Admin Manager in administering employee benefits, managing payroll, and maintaining accurate HR records.
- Collaborate with the HR and Admin Manager and payroll provider to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal labor laws.
- Oversee recruitment and onboarding processes to support organizational staffing needs.
- Act as the senior point of contact for HR inquiries and help foster a positive, inclusive work culture.
- Serve as a key member of the leadership team, partnering with the Executive Director and Board to shape organizational strategy and align financial planning with the mission and long-term goals.
- Provide strategic financial insight and scenario analysis to support major decisions, including program expansion, funding diversification, capital allocation, risk management, and sustainability.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred.
- Experience: 5–10 years of progressive experience in Finance and HR, with at least 3 years in a management role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, bill.com) and database systems (Salesforce), as well as Microsoft Office Suite and payroll platforms (Paychex).
- Nonprofit Knowledge: Solid understanding of fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit regulatory requirements.
- Competencies: High ethical standards, hands-on management style, strong interpersonal skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex financial data for nonfinance staff.

Location & Schedule
This role is based on site at Gather’s Portsmouth, NH facility. On-site presence is expected for a minimum of four days per week.
Compensation
Salary range is $50,000–$60,000 per year. This part-time position offers optional 401(k) participation with up to a 4% match and immediate vesting, plus paid holidays that align with the scheduled workdays. Health and dental insurance or other paid time off are not included due to the part-time status.
