Job Description

Based in Nashville, TN with remote options, the Director of Financial Reporting oversees GAAP and statutory financial reporting for a growing non-standard auto insurer, ensuring regulatory compliance and partnering cross-functionally as a technical accounting expert in a high-growth underwriting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the financial reporting function, managing monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and deliverables.
  • Lead GAAP and statutory reporting, including preparation of Annual and Quarterly Statements and related disclosures.
  • Direct the MARS audit process end-to-end, including planning, coordination, testing support, and final deliverables.
  • Serve as the technical accounting lead, advising on complex and non-routine transactions.
  • Provide guidance on complex accounting issues, document conclusions, and defend positions with auditors.
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures aligned with evolving GAAP and statutory requirements.
  • Monitor and implement emerging accounting standards and assess their operational and financial impact on the business.
  • Partner across underwriting, actuarial, and claims teams to ensure accurate financial representation of a high-volume, rapidly changing book of business, including rate changes, claims volatility, and growth.
  • Oversee external audits and regulatory examinations, acting as the primary point of contact for auditors and regulators.
  • Strengthen and scale internal controls over financial reporting in a fast-growth environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience, with depth in Property & Casualty insurance and U.S. GAAP.
  • Deep expertise in GAAP and statutory accounting (SAP/NAIC).
  • Strong understanding of SSAPs, NAIC Annual and Quarterly Statement instructions, and disclosure requirements.
  • Proven experience in a high-growth or complex insurance environment; non-standard auto insurance experience preferred.
  • Experience with public company reporting requirements is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through ambiguity, drive process improvements, and influence cross-functional partners.
  • Own financial integrity in fast-moving, high-scrutiny environments, supporting leadership decisions in volatile markets.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, ERP systems, and other reporting tools.

Physical Demands

Regular manual tasks, frequent talking or hearing, and substantial sitting, bending, and reaching are required. Occasional standing and walking, with lift capability up to 10 pounds.
