Job Description
Jowonio School invites a detail-oriented Director of Finance to steward financial operations and support the organization’s long term health. This onsite, Syracuse based role reports to the Executive Director and collaborates closely with leadership, the Board, and external partners in a nonprofit educational setting. Position details
- Location: Syracuse, NY onsite
- Salary: USD 90,000 – 110,000 per year
- Schedule: Full-time, exempt, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
- Reports to: Executive Director
- Supervises: one Accounting Associate
What you'll do
- Oversee financial management and day to day accounting operations to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Lead budget development, financial forecasting, and cash flow planning
- Manage payroll processing and benefits related financial activities for about 100 employees
- Administer government billing and reimbursements, and oversee grant financial management and reporting
- Coordinate board financial reporting, audits, and the Consolidated Fiscal Report CFR submission
- Oversee Friends of Jowonio financial activities and related monthly reconciliations
- Handle day to day fiscal operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts and disbursements, and banking
- Administer all school bank accounts (KeyBank, Fidelity Investments, PayPal, Stripe, Auctria) and perform monthly reconciliations
- Maintain bookkeeping software and the chart of accounts; prepare and review journal entries
- Prepare budgets for Summer, School Year, and Composite Fiscal Year for Board approval; collaborate on program and grant budgets (UPK, OPWDD, and other funding opportunities)
- Monitor expenditures against approved budgets and provide budget to actual reports to the Board and external funders
- Supervise government receivables billing for SCIS, SEIT, UPK with Syracuse City School District, 611/619 program billing, DSS subsidies, and OPWDD grants
- Ensure accurate billing rates, program assignments, service prescriptions, and attendance records; reconcile payments and balances due
- Monitor family tuition payments; reconcile with the General Ledger, School Cues, Stripe, and internal logs; follow up on delinquencies as needed
- Coordinate benefits deductions in Paycom and allocate payroll expenses by program for reporting
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to the Board, prepare monthly cash flow reports, and deliver quarterly updates to the Finance Committee
- Support insurance and contract renewals with required financial information and maintain certificates of insurance for funders and partners
- Coordinate annual audit preparation and finalizing adjusting entries with auditors
- Prepare CFR related analyses, including program allocations, staffing configurations, and variance explanations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required
- Master’s degree, CPA, or equivalent advanced certification preferred
- 5–7 years of progressively responsible financial management experience
- Nonprofit accounting and financial reporting experience strongly preferred
- Experience with budgeting, financial forecasting, and financial reporting
- Experience managing government funding, grants, or education related programs preferred
- Experience working with boards of directors and finance committees preferred
- Knowledge of payroll administration and employee benefit plans; familiarity with accounting software and financial management systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills; ability to communicate complex financial information clearly; ability to maintain confidentiality
