Job Description
The Director of Finance and Operations at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church leads finance, human resources, facilities, and daily operations to sustain the church’s mission and long-term vitality. This onsite leadership role is based in Washington, DC and collaborates across ministry teams and governance bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff and the Session via the Personnel Committee to shape a staffing structure aligned with congregational needs, mission, and resources.
- Provide strategic guidance on ongoing operational support required to advance the church’s vision.
- Pursue revenue opportunities from existing and new sources, including facility use income and expanded giving from inside and outside the church.
- Identify and implement measures to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
- Deliver clear financial and operational analyses to inform key decisions.
- Represent the church to external partners, funders, and stakeholders as needed.
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and cross-department collaboration.
- Oversee financial operations, including accounting, payroll, and reporting, in partnership with the Administration and Finance Committee.
- Lead the development and oversight of financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting with the Administration and Finance Committee.
- Supervise capital improvement initiatives as required.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for leadership, including Session members and committees.
- Establish and maintain a stable financial staffing structure to ensure ongoing finances management and responsive donor communications.
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, standards, policies, and best practices.
- Oversee financial analysis for the annual stewardship campaign.
- Coordinate the annual audit and liaise with external auditors.
- Manage cash flow, investments, and reserve strategies in coordination with the Investment Committee.
- Oversee financial systems and pursue improvements, including consolidating platforms into a unified system.
- Manage risk management and the church's insurance program.
- Supervise HR functions and compliance, including hiring, onboarding, payroll, benefits administration, and performance evaluations.
- Implement HR policies to maintain a positive, professional work environment.
- Oversee facilities and custodial staff in maintenance, security, usage, and scheduling, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise staff responsible for daily administrative functions, communications, and IT.
- Support compliance for the Weekday Nursery School and After School Programs with applicable laws.
- Oversee vendor contracts and agreements.
- Provide regular updates to the Personnel Committee.
- Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and insurance requirements.
- Lead efforts to improve internal systems, tools, policies, and workflows to support a growing team.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Familiarity with a church environment is strongly preferred; willingness to attend services periodically and engage with congregants.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in finance and operations, preferably within a nonprofit or mission-driven setting.
- Solid knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, and audit best practices.
- Proven leadership and mission-driven team and project management capabilities.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and strategic-thinking skills.
- Proficiency with accounting and financial management software (such as Excel and QuickBooks) and familiarity with AI tools to optimize usage.
- Willingness to attend occasional evening meetings, typically conducted via Zoom.

Compensation
Salary: USD 100,000 – 120,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
