Job Description
Based in Saint Paul, MN (hybrid), this hands-on Financial Controller will own the financial operations of a $28M+ business, including AP/AR, monthly close, and reporting, with a salary range of USD 85,000β100,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, managing vendor payments, client invoicing, and collections.
- Complete the monthly close within 5β7 business days after month-end.
- Prepare and present weekly and monthly financial reports that are clear and actionable for leadership.
- Reconcile bank accounts and corporate credit cards across multiple accounts.
- Conduct light financial analysis to identify trends, flag anomalies, and deliver actionable insights.
- Track expenses and monitor the budget to ensure adherence to approved guidelines.
- Coordinate with external bookkeeping team and financial advisors to support month-end close.
- Maintain clean, organized financial records in the accounting system.
- Assist with debt management tracking and cash flow monitoring.
- Design and continually improve automated, paperless financial processes.
Requirements
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with substantial time in roles such as Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager.
- Prior experience as a staff accountant or senior accountant before stepping into a controller-level role.
- A track record of stability; sustained tenure at each employer; avoid patterns of short stays (under 3 years).
- Experience across a mix of business sizes, ideally mid-market to larger companies, or a blend of private and corporate environments.
- Audit experience is a strong plus; familiarity with audits demonstrates the needed documentation discipline.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting (not Finance).
- CPA preferred, but not required for candidates with the right experience and track record.
- Advanced Excel proficiency; daily use with speed and accuracy.
- QuickBooks experience required.
- Preference for lean, automated, and paperless operations rather than heavy manual processes.
- Familiarity with AI tools and applying them to financial workflows is a meaningful plus.
- Experience with accrual-based accounting and solid working knowledge of GAAP.
- Experience designing original financial reports from scratch, not merely updating templates.
- Ability to present financial information clearly to non-finance leaders and translate numbers into decisions.
- History of meeting regularly with report users to ensure data is understood and actionable.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented; you catch errors before they become problems.
- Self-directed and proactive; you identify needs and act without waiting to be asked.
- Clear, direct communication; if something is off with the numbers, leadership hears about it immediately.
- Experience collaborating closely with operations teams is a strong plus.

- A pattern of short-term stints across multiple companies and insufficient tenure to work through challenges.
- Spent career in large corporations performing a single narrow function and not comfortable wearing multiple hats.
- Your processes are heavily manual, paper-dependent, or resistant to automation.
- You need someone to hold your hand; we expect full ownership of the function.
- You struggle with deadlines; bills donβt wait, and neither do we.
- You came up through finance, banking, or investment roles rather than accounting and bookkeeping.

- Direct visibility to leadership and the strategic decisions driving the business.
- Clear growth path into Finance Manager or higher as the company scales.
- Learn how a fast-growing company operates financially, alongside experienced advisors and a hands-on leadership team.
