Job Description

Victoria Club is seeking a Financial Controller to lead the club’s accounting and financial operations from its Riverside, CA location. Reporting to the General Manager under the directive of the Board of Directors, this role oversees the accounting team and helps ensure accurate records, timely reporting, and effective financial controls across budgeting, taxes, member billing, payroll, and internal auditing.

The Financial Controller will manage day-to-day financial administration, prepare monthly and other required financial statements, and coordinate budgets and forecasts with the Treasurer, committees, departments, and the General Manager. The position also serves as the club’s specialist for key financial and administrative systems and supports external auditors and board-level reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the club’s financials and accounting, including the annual budget, payables, receivables, taxes, member billing, payroll, and other assigned accounting duties.
  • Supervise accounting staff, including staffing, scheduling, training, and professional development.
  • Develop and administer policies, procedures, and systems covering accounting, auditing, budgeting, taxes, and related financial records.
  • Maintain accounting records and perform development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information.
  • Evaluate operating results through costs, budgets, operating policies, trends, and opportunities to increase profit.
  • Direct club financial operations and direct internal auditing programs to confirm records are accurate and established policies are consistently followed.
  • Prepare monthly trial balances, financial statements, and supporting schedules and data required for financial reports.
  • Coordinate budget and financial forecast preparation with the Treasurer, committees, departments, and General Manager.
  • Monitor budgeted versus actual expenditures and advise management on variances and potential causes.
  • Partner with external auditors to ensure procedures align with club policies.
  • Prepare and verify reports for agencies and trade/professional organizations when dissemination is consistent with club policies.
  • Direct inventory processes for beverages, food, golf items, supplies, equipment, furnishings, and related categories; cross-check inventory work sheets and pricing.
  • Maintain vendor accounts, including submitting credit applications, obtaining W-9 information, and processing 1099s.
  • Verify insurance records and billing related to club property.
  • Prepare and supervise applicable federal, state, and local tax returns; prepare quarterly and annual tax reports and excise tax reports.
  • Maintain key journals and registers including sales journal, charge journal, checks register, bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventories, general journal, payroll and personnel files, excise tax report, depreciation accounts, asset management, loan amortization schedules, and financial statements.
  • Operate the club’s in-house computer system (Jonas), oversee the club website and quarterly newsletter publication.
  • Produce computer reports for payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and monthly financial statements.
  • Reconcile bank statements and manage the petty cash fund; audit and pay bills and invoices.
  • Prepare payroll, payroll accruals, and monthly workers’ comp reports; maintain accurate deduction information for health insurance, garnishments, and related items.
  • Administer the club’s 401(k) plan, supervise time and attendance/leave records, and oversee payroll-related tax returns and reports.
  • Supervise membership dues billing and collections; update member master accounts as needed.
  • Maintain club license and permit renewals; oversee purchases of general supplies and equipment including leases, purchases, and repairs.
  • Administer club phone systems and provide membership and financial management information to the Board of Directors and committee chairpersons.
  • Support board governance by attending board meetings and recording minutes to assist the Board Secretary; handle confidential correspondence for the General Manager and Board of Directors.
  • Perform additional duties as outlined by the General Manager, Finance Committee, and/or the Board of Directors.

Supervision

  • Oversees Accounts Receivable/Admin and Accounts Payable/Admin.
  • Interacts daily with other managers within the operation and provides direction to accounting staff.

Requirements

  • 8 years of experience as a Financial Director or Controller (required).
  • Located in Riverside, CA 92506 (required) and able to work in person.
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
  • Problem solving: identify and resolve problems in a timely manner by gathering and analyzing information.
  • Customer service: respond promptly and professionally to member needs; excellent communication skills.
  • Planning/organizing: prioritize work, use time efficiently, distribute tasks, and provide instructions per club guidelines.
  • Quality control: accuracy and thoroughness; monitor work quality and apply feedback.
  • Adaptability: manage competing demands and address frequent change.
  • Dependability: be on time and complete assignments accurately and timely.
  • Safety and security: observe safety procedures and use equipment/materials properly.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of Jonas accounting software preferred.
  • Proficient with 10-key calculators and able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Basic understanding and application of safety policies and practices.
  • Physical requirements include close vision and peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and regular use of hands and fingers for reaching and feeling; frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, talk, and hear.

Pay and Schedule

  • From $100,000.00 per year
