Job Description

A hands-on Controller will lead accounting operations, payroll compliance, and payroll systems management for a growing multi-state telecom and infrastructure services organization onsite in Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the company’s day-to-day accounting functions and overall financial administration.
  • Oversee general ledger activities and the month-end close process.
  • Compile monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain the accuracy and reliability of financial records.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning.
  • Monitor cash flow and working capital requirements.
  • Coordinate audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce financial policies and procedures.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership.
  • Oversee payroll administration processes and internal controls.
  • Ensure payroll operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert on multi-state payroll compliance.
  • Manage payroll tax compliance and state registrations.
  • Track employee work locations and state-specific payroll obligations.
  • Maintain payroll tax jurisdictions and ongoing maintenance.
  • Collaborate with HR on employee classifications, payroll changes, and compliance matters.
  • Review payroll reports and audits for accuracy and compliance.
  • Support payroll issue resolution and corrective actions as needed.
  • Establish payroll controls to minimize errors and compliance risk.
  • Lead or assist in implementing and optimizing ADP payroll and workforce management systems.
  • Ensure payroll system configurations align with multi-state operations.
  • Validate payroll tax setup, earning codes, deductions, approvals, and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with ADP implementation teams and internal stakeholders during system deployments.
  • Develop payroll administration procedures and system documentation.
  • Identify automation opportunities and drive process improvements.
  • Provide leadership to payroll and accounting staff.
  • Support development and expansion of payroll team responsibilities.
  • Establish accountability and process ownership within Finance and Payroll.
  • Create training materials and procedural documentation.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration between Finance, Payroll, HR, and Operations.
  • Develop and maintain internal financial and payroll controls.
  • Identify operational and compliance risks and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper segregation of duties and approval workflows.
  • Support workers' compensation reporting and compliance activities.
  • Monitor contractor payments and classification compliance.
  • Maintain audit readiness across financial and payroll functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • CPA designation preferred but not required
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting, finance, payroll, or financial operations experience
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership role overseeing accounting, finance, payroll, or related functions
  • Demonstrated experience supporting multi-state payroll environments
  • Experience with payroll tax compliance and payroll administration controls
  • Experience implementing or managing payroll systems, preferably ADP
  • Experience supporting field-based, project-based, telecommunications, construction, utility, infrastructure, or similar operational workforces strongly preferred
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or developing payroll personnel preferred
