Director of Finance

Strategic and hands-on finance leader to head the financial function within the waste management sector, guiding budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and partnering with operations to drive profitability and sustainable growth. This onsite role is based in Oakland, CA.

Job Overview

Location: Oakland, CA (onsite). Compensation: USD 150,000 – 175,000 per year. This senior leadership role combines strategic oversight with practical financial management across multiple entities domestically and internationally, with a focus on long-term growth and potential IPO considerations.

Responsibilities

• Strategic Financial Planning: Lead the annual budgeting process and long-range financial planning, with a specific focus on municipal contract renewals and disposal site life-cycle costs.
• Operational Analysis: Conduct in-depth operational financial analysis to inform decision-making and drive performance.
• CAPEX Management: Oversee financing and depreciation for heavy equipment, CNG and electric fleet transitions, and facility infrastructure projects.
• Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to California environmental regulations, such as SB 1383, and reflect their impact on financial reporting and rate-setting.
• Contract Management: Partner with the executive team on franchise agreement negotiations and municipal bid modeling.
• Team Leadership: Mentor and develop the finance team, fostering accuracy, transparency, and continuous improvement.
• Future Financial Planning: Support growth initiatives and prospective IPO considerations to position the company for strategic expansion.
• Oversight of Multiple Entities: Manage the financials across numerous entities domestically and internationally.

Requirements

• Experience: 10+ years of progressive financial leadership, ideally within waste management or environmental sectors, logistics, construction, or other heavy-asset industries.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or economics. CPA or MBA highly preferred.
• Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency with ERP systems (eg, NetSuite, Oracle) and route-management software integration.
• Analytical Rigor: Proven ability to translate complex operational data into actionable financial insights.
• Regional Knowledge: Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area labor market and regulatory environment.
