Job Description
Director of Finance for Gould Medical Group within Sutter Health Greater Central Valley, reporting to the GMG CEO and serving as a key financial advisor to the GMG President/CEO and Board.
Responsibilities
- Maintain financial and accounting policies and practices, ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory standards.
- Support the Finance Committee, assisting the Finance Chair as needed.
- Monitor controllable versus non-controllable costs for the Medical Group.
- Oversee physician services related to compensation, benefits, and GMG operating costs.
- Identify and implement cost reductions in non-value-add areas of the business.
- Ensure Corporate Practice of Medicine separation and compliance with the Foundation.
- Oversee the Foundation professional and management services agreement to confirm services are reasonably priced within fair market value, exercising indirect, influence-based oversight.
- Participate in joint financial planning and budgeting processes.
- Collaborate with Revenue Cycle on charge capture, coding/documentation, denials, and financial performance.
- Oversee the GMG Administrative budget, ensuring cost reasonableness and value, with annual external benchmarking.
- Manage internal GMG operational budgeting and tracking.
- Maintain compliance with IRS, CMS, Stark, and Anti-kickback guardrails.
- Model current and future clinical practices and service lines as needed.
- Provide analytics and transparent reporting, translating finances to physician leaders and staff.
- Oversee insurance coverage layers to reduce organizational risk and increase value.
- Participate in PSA annually; ensure Foundation services are economical and do not create de facto control over medical decision making or physician compensation.
- Facilitate the process for physician/APC compensation, market assessment, and internal equity.
- Contribute to value-based care design, capitation, and shared savings arrangements.
- Ensure risk contracts improve physician economics rather than shifting financial burden and risk.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or relevant field.
- Strong knowledge and experience of corporate practice of medicine, Stark, and Anti-kickback regulations.
- 10+ years of experience in healthcare finance with progressively responsible management experience.
- 5+ years in a leadership role in a large, matrixed organization.
- Proven competence and success in financial operations and strategic planning.
- Experience in physician practice operations and demonstrated record of developing and maintaining working partnerships with physicians.
- Experience in mergers and acquisitions and investor relations.
- Experience presenting to a Board of Directors.

Reporting Relationships
The Director of Finance reports to the CEO of GMG.
Working Relationships/Contacts
This position works closely with the GMG leadership, Sutter Health leadership, and employed or contracted physicians.
Geographic Area
Central Valley. Modesto, Stockton, Lodi, Tracy, Turlock, Manteca, and Lathrop.
Physical Effort / Working Environment
Minimal risk office setting, extended periods of sitting, frequent travel, telephone and computer use. Regular evening and early morning meetings. Travel between care centers required.
