Job Description
San Diego State University, part of the California State University (CSU) system, is hiring a financial analysis leader to strengthen data-informed decision-making across strategic initiatives. In this Financial Analysis Manager role, you will build project-focused financial models and provide executive-level advisory support to assess long-term investments, real estate initiatives, and revenue-generating opportunities.
Role overview
- Develop financial models and business case analyses for strategic investments, real estate projects, and revenue-generating initiatives.
- Assess financial performance and long-term viability of enterprise projects using scenario analysis, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Produce executive-level reporting and recommendations to support strategic decision-making and organizational priorities.
- Collaborate with campus leaders and cross-functional teams to evaluate new opportunities and advance high-impact initiatives.
Key responsibilities
- Build sophisticated financial models and business cases, including ROI analyses and other executive-ready materials.
- Develop analyses and reporting that help determine long-term financial viability for large-scale opportunities.
- Evaluate initiatives such as real estate development projects, public-private partnerships, infrastructure investments, and other major business opportunities.
- Partner with senior leadership to guide decisions with lasting impact on SDSU’s future.
- Contribute to a newly created position with the opportunity to help shape this strategic function.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, business administration, or a related field.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, management consulting, advisory services, project finance, strategic planning, or a related field.
- Experience in complex organizations with multiple funding sources or business lines; higher education or public sector experience is a plus.
- Advanced knowledge of financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical methodologies.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, accounting principles, and financial reporting practices.
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and translate findings into actionable insights for executive audiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear, concise delivery of complex information.
- Proven ability to exercise independent judgment, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated collaboration across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling and data analysis.
- Experience with data visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
- Proven critical thinking and problem-solving experience, including assessing financial and operational risk.

About the department
The Division of Business and Financial Affairs (BFA) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the university’s financial, administrative, and auxiliary enterprises. Within BFA, the Department of Financial Operations is responsible for financial and budgetary controls and procedures and is directly responsible to the Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs. Financial Operations focuses on data-informed decision making, operational excellence, and inclusive practices supporting the university’s mission and long-term financial sustainability.
Compensation and schedule
- Salary range: USD 120,000 to 130,000 annually
- Full-time, at-will role with comprehensive benefits
- Exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation
- Standard SDSU work hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (may vary based on operational needs)
- Partial telecommuting approved with onsite work in San Diego

Preferred qualifications
- Experience synthesizing large datasets into meaningful financial narratives and recommendations.
- Master’s degree in finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field.
- Experience with infrastructure, Public-Private Partnerships, real estate development, or higher education finance is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of CSU, governmental, or nonprofit financial policies and practices (e.g., GASB).
- Professional certifications such as CPA, CFA, or similar.
