The Director of Finance for Community Action of Greater Indianapolis leads the organization’s financial operations, with a focus on fiscal stewardship, compliance, and transparent reporting. Based in Indianapolis, this onsite role supports sound financial strategy and provides guidance to senior leadership and the Board Finance Committee through budgeting, reporting, controls, and audit oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the organization’s financial strategy to support fiscal sustainability and responsible stewardship of funds.
- Develop financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
- Advise the Executive Director and leadership team using financial analysis and decision-ready insights.
- Manage the full financial reporting cycle, ensuring timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, federal and state regulations, and grant requirements.
- Oversee external audits, fiscal monitoring visits, and tax-related reporting.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to organizational fiscal policies and procedures.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, including partnerships with program leaders on program and departmental budgets.
- Monitor financial performance, conduct variance analysis, and provide recommendations.
- Support grant budgeting, cost allocation, and financial planning for new funding opportunities.
- Oversee cash flow planning and management to support operational stability, including monitoring receivables, payables, and liquidity.
- Ensure purchasing controls and fiscal accountability across the organization.
- Prepare and submit financial reports to regulatory agencies, funders, and leadership, including grant reporting requirements at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Oversee the complete 1099 process from W-9 collection through electronic filing.
- Serve as the primary financial contact for vendors and financial partners, including support for contract review and fiscal monitoring of external partners and service providers.
- Supervise the Staff Accountant, Accounting & Weatherization Specialist, and Accounts Payable Specialist.
- Serve as a key advisor to the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee.
Requirements
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in business administration (or equivalent) with a concentration of accounting and measurable experience.
- Commensurate experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and cash management.
- Commensurate experience with accounts payable and payroll.
- Experience with the Abila accounting system is a plus.
- Not-for-profit experience preferred.
- Highest ethical standards, with sound decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively in written and verbal formats.

Work Location, Pay, and Working Conditions
This position is onsite in Indianapolis, IN. Pay is $85,000 to $90,000 per year. Work is performed in a standard office environment, and the role may require working beyond regular office hours to meet deadlines and support the needs of the population the organization serves.
Independent Actions and Working Relationship
Actions are governed by Community Action policies and procedures and non-profit by-laws. The role works with all levels of management, Community Action personnel, and the general public, and requires high levels of courtesy, diplomacy, and tact.
