Job Description

United Way NCA is seeking a senior finance leader to steward accounting, budgeting, and risk management across its programs and fundraising initiatives. This hybrid role in Vienna, VA sits at the nexus of finance and mission delivery, guiding a dedicated team while partnering closely with the CEO, HR, and IT to support program outcomes and fundraising success.

Position Summary

The Vice-President of Accounting and Finance/Controller reports to the President and CEO and oversees the direct management of key accounting and financial reporting functions. This includes budgeting, planning and forecasting; financial and regulatory reporting; internal controls and risk management; research and analysis; the procure-to-pay cycle; and compliance with contractual documents and government regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee annual revenue, expense and capital budgeting; provide staff with guidance, timelines, tools and training; promote zero-based bottom-up budgeting; analyze revenue and expense trends; prepare narrative and schedules; and coordinate review with the CEO, Finance Committee and Board.
  • Manage Enterprise Risk by maintaining financial systems, policies, internal controls, segregation of duties and security access; prevent/detect fraud and conflicts of interest; ensure timely reporting and compliance with contracts, donor restrictions, debt covenants and audits.
  • Lead internal and external reporting, including budgets, projections, monthly variance analysis, customized reports, financial statements and notes, cash flow forecasts, and regulatory filings (Form 990, Form 5500, A-133 audit, etc.).
  • Provide financial analytics and counsel, conducting in-depth analyses, designing spreadsheets, assessing risk, and informing management decisions.
  • Serve as Management’s liaison to the external audit team, ensuring timely fulfillment of engagement terms for GAAP financial statements, Form 990 and related services; deliver draft statements and footnotes.
  • Prepare annual financial statements and notes with GAAP presentation and updated formats; reflect time allocation in statements of functional expenses.
  • Provide information for IRS Form 990; ensure accuracy of responses and schedules; share the Form 990 with the Board and file by year-end, securing extensions as needed.
  • Oversee procure-to-pay processes, ensuring proper authority, substantiation, coding and timely payments; manage vendor master data and 1099s; administer procurement and travel card programs.
  • Support full-cycle payroll, time and attendance, and employee benefits in partnership with HR to ensure accurate pay and compliance.
  • Coordinate Campaign Accountability to ensure fundraising activities are reflected in budgeting, reporting, risk mitigation, audits and cash flow forecasting.
  • Pursue continuous improvement by implementing systems, policies and processes to raise finance department quality and efficiency; lead or participate in special projects.
  • Lead or participate in special projects and back-up activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (minimum).
  • Active CPA license.
  • Non-profit accounting and finance experience.
  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance or MBA (preferred).
  • At least 10 years of accounting and finance experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of broad finance and accounting management in a nonprofit with a budget of at least $10 million; hands-on leadership in a complex nonprofit with high transaction volume.
  • At least 5 years of people management experience overseeing accounting and finance staff.
  • Integrity, credibility and a strong work ethic; proactive, hands-on strategic thinker with a commitment to fiscal stewardship and exceptional service.
  • Experience managing financial and government audits and working with external auditors.
  • Track record in government, corporate and foundation grant accounting and reporting with restrictions and conditions.
  • Technology savvy with advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software (preferably Great Plains, FRX, PN3, Andar) and strong Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training and retaining a diverse team; effective delegation abilities.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to present data for strategic decisions to senior management, grantors, donors and boards.

Compensation

Salary: USD 155,000 - 170,000 per year
