Job Description
The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership over Rochester Childfirst Network’s financial operations, budgeting, and financial strategy. This onsite role partners with the Executive Director to manage day-to-day accounting, reporting, grant and contract processes, audit readiness, internal controls, cash flow, and GAAP compliance, while presenting financial information to board committees and senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the administrative systems and staff supporting the agency’s financial management.
- Coordinate the month-end close process, sharing responsibilities for account reconciliations and journal entries with the Staff Accountant.
- Analyze and present financial reports accurately and on a timely basis; communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
- Compile financial reporting materials for donor segments and oversee financial, project/program, and grants accounting.
- Implement contracts management and financial management/reporting processes to support billing and collections; ensure steady financial data and cash flow aligned with operational needs.
- In collaboration with the Director of Development and Marketing, support appropriate grant fund use, compliance, and mitigation of audit risks.
- Manage insurance procurement, compliance, and risk.
- Update and implement business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s policy and procedure manual.
- Communicate critical financial matters to the board of directors and the leadership team.
- Lead the annual budgeting and planning process with the Executive Director and program managers/directors, administer and review budgets, monitor progress and changes, and provide updates to senior leadership.
- Create and maintain budgeting record-keeping documentation to support effective budget management by leadership.
- Analyze monthly and year-to-date operating results versus budget; meet with program leaders and provide recommendations.
- Provide forecasting of current results and five-year plan outcomes as requested by the Executive Director and the board of directors.
- Develop and implement GAAP-aligned accounting procedures.
- Monitor revenue and expense accounting by program to support annual audit preparation.
- Coordinate month-end close and reconciliations, oversee timely financial reporting, and review results with the Executive Director.
- Ensure accurate accounting of grants, contracts, and temporarily restricted funds consistent with applicable requirements.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and the board’s finance committee; assess and implement necessary changes.
- Oversee preparation of the annual Consolidated Fiscal Report prepared by the CFR consultant.
- Follow up on audit recommendations and implement required changes; ensure audit-related benchmarks remain within recommended ranges.
- Provide revenue projections, financial analysis, and planning support, including business modeling and communication of financial status against strategic budget to the executive team.
- Directly manage cash flow and forecasting, including weekly cash flow oversight to ensure sufficient balances and fulfillment of obligations.
- Supervise the Staff Accountant to maintain accounts payable timeliness and support accounts receivable improvement, including Accounts Receivable Aging and Accounts Payable monitoring.
- Supervise handling of bank deposits, reconciliations, and transfers.
- Manage agency grants to ensure financial contractual obligations are met.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to manage actual performance against budget, address gaps, support appropriate payor mix, and pursue annual financial and operational goals.
- Work with the HR Director and Executive Director to support competitive annual salaries aimed at retention and attraction of qualified employees.
- Participate as a member of the leadership team and Board of Directors, providing guidance on long-term fiscal stability and growth.
- Ensure insurance policies align with assessed organizational risks and are integrated into the organization’s financial strategy.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
- Monitor the Staff Accountant’s work, with particular attention to Accounts Receivable Aging, Accounts Payable, and cash flow.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
- 8 to 10 years of progressive financial experience, including 3 to 5 years in a non-profit setting and a minimum of 2 years supervising.
- Excellent supervisory and leadership skills.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Strong ability to translate complex financial data into plain terms for non-financial stakeholders.
- Professional writing for reports and clear, concise verbal communication.
- Proficiency in financial arithmetic, data analysis, and financial reporting.
- Advanced analytical thinking, deductive logic for risk management, and strategic problem-solving.
- Budgeting, leadership, data analysis, relationship building, and time management skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, professionalism, and diplomacy.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Advanced Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Gmail, as well as accounting software, payroll systems, and internet software.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or MBA.
- Non-profit GAAP expertise.
- Experience with Consolidated Fiscal Report.
Salary and Employment Details

- Compensation: USD 95,000 - 112,000 per year
