Job Description

Directs the financial strategy, planning, reporting, and operational finance functions for First Mid's insurance activities. This onsite role is based in Mattoon, IL, and partners with agency leadership to drive profitable growth, improve operational efficiency, ensure regulatory compliance, and support mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives. Compensation ranges from USD 96,500 to 137,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the agency's financial strategy aligned with overall organizational goals.
  • Report to the CEO or designated executive and build financial models to inform decisions and strategic initiatives.
  • Deliver financial analyses and recommendations to back growth initiatives, investments, acquisitions, and operational enhancements.
  • Oversee long-range financial planning and scenario analysis.
  • Manage the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting cycles.
  • Evaluate performance, profitability, and key financial metrics of the agency.
  • Track variances and identify opportunities to improve financial results.
  • Supervise all accounting operations, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and closing activities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting on monthly, quarterly, and annual cycles.
  • Maintain GAAP compliance and adherence to relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and external reviews.
  • Monitor and analyze commission revenue, contingent income, fee income, and producer compensation plans.
  • Track carrier receivables, agency bill operations, and premium trust accounts where applicable.
  • Assess profitability across departments, producers, lines of business, and office locations.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and key operating metrics for agency performance.
  • Ensure effective internal controls and financial safeguards are in place.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff.
  • Set performance objectives and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage cross-departmental and cross-office collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with financial, tax, licensing, and regulatory standards.
  • Develop and uphold internal controls and financial policies.
  • Support enterprise risk management and business continuity planning efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance financial systems, reporting capabilities, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead the implementation and optimization of accounting and agency management systems.
  • Promote data driven decision making across the organization.
  • Participate in acquisition evaluations, due diligence, valuation analyses, and integration activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Professional designation such as CPA, CMA, MBA, or equivalent preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience.
  • 3+ years in a senior financial leadership role.
  • Experience within the insurance industry, insurance agency, brokerage, or financial services environment strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic planning.
  • Experience managing audits, tax compliance, and financial reporting.
