Finance Executive Director
Job Description
Finance Executive Director role supporting the Samish Indian Nation by leading accounting operations and advising leadership on financial execution and compliance.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the accounting staff, delegate work, and provide mentoring and support for career growth within the Nation
- Set clear expectations and encourage open communication to maintain a team-oriented environment
- Provide training on tribe-wide financial systems
- Partner with Human Resources and the CFO on hiring and personnel matters, including keeping job descriptions current
- Own the month-end close and identify opportunities to improve efficiency
- Analyze the general ledger and reconcile cash and general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers (or review and approve others’ work)
- Prepare and approve journal vouchers required by reconciliations
- Maintain capital asset records and build systems to ensure interfund payables are recorded correctly and balances are cleared
- Support preparation for annual financial statement and single audits
- Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements and tax filings using sound accounting principles and strong internal controls
- Provide guidance to Tribal government as part of the Senior Officer Team
- Work with the Executive Director Team to maximize available funding so departments and activities approved by the Samish Tribal Council remain supported
- Contribute to policy changes, strategic planning, business process improvements, workplace culture, emergency management, community outreach, and security controls
- Carry out policies approved by the Tribal Council and recommend changes when appropriate
- Advise on financial systems, policies, and procedures; deliver monthly, quarterly, and annual reports
- Help update the Nation’s Strategic Plan and Work Action Plans
- Recommend funding options, new initiatives, and process improvements; assess how the accounting department is organized to support growth
- Monitor state and federal policy and regulatory changes, review tribal policies for compliance, and recommend revisions
- Support Samcor staff with accounting
- Advise leadership on responses to local, state, and federal issues; attend relevant meetings, conferences, and negotiations
- Build and maintain positive relationships with community members and with local, state, regional, and federal partners
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- Five or more years of accounting or related experience
- Background in not-for-profit, local government, or tribal government is strongly preferred
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of fund accounting software or ability to learn it quickly
- Experience with accurate data entry, reconciliation, and file management

Pay
- $63,000.00 - $118,000.00 per year
