Job Description

This onsite Financial Counselor role supports patients at Agave Ridge Behavioral Health Hospital by helping them understand insurance benefits and their financial responsibilities. The position focuses on insurance verification, patient financial guidance, upfront collections, and accurate maintenance of patient financial records within a behavioral health setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify insurance benefits and audit admission paperwork for accuracy and completeness.
  • Review and update patient demographic details and insurance information in the patient accounting system.
  • Provide counseling to patients and guarantors regarding coverage, available benefits, expected out-of-pocket costs, and payment options.
  • Collect patient balances including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other applicable charges.
  • Complete financial assistance applications and confirm that income and expense documentation is provided and verified.
  • Prepare charity care documentation, administrative adjustment requests, and payment arrangements when required.
  • Maintain collection, charity, and adjustment logs, including review of activity with leadership.
  • Analyze account information and take appropriate action to support timely payment and reimbursement.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 3+ years in healthcare financial counseling, patient access, billing, or a related field.
  • Insurance knowledge: Extensive knowledge of Commercial Insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.
  • Skills: Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Communication: Ability to explain complex insurance and financial information to patients and families.

Work Setting

This is an onsite position in Mesa, AZ. The role is patient-facing within a behavioral health environment, requiring a compassionate approach when assisting individuals through challenging circumstances.

Role Focus

The Financial Counselor will serve as a primary resource for patients and guarantors, performing insurance verification, delivering financial counseling, supporting upfront collections, arranging payments, and ensuring patient financial records remain accurate and current.
