Job Description
Sims Metal is seeking a Financial Planning and Analysis Manager to join the North Haven, CT on-site team. Reporting to the regional commercial and operations finance group, the role provides analytical insights to improve margins, inform decision-making, and drive cost efficiency across North America. The position offers a salary range of $98,000 - $125,000 per year and requires a minimum of three years of analytical experience. A degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Analyze commercial data to identify drivers of trading margins by supplier, business segment, material group, and geographic regions; identify trends and opportunities to grow and stabilize margins.
- Partner with the regional buy force team to analyze supplier profitability and maximize margin from buy force activity.
- Develop standard reports that reveal which suppliers or supplier categories contribute the most to margins.
- Present analytical insights to Commercial leadership, recommend changes, and support initiatives to expand margins on both total and per tonne bases.
- Monitor the execution of these initiatives to ensure success and continuously improve performance.
- Provide transparency to traders by monitoring key performance indicators such as volumes, new business, and segment performance to drive targeted buy performance.
- Coordinate meetings with regional commercial teams to review business performance against budgets, targets, and forecasts.
- Align analyses with wider business objectives to ensure recommendations are prioritized, analyzed, and presented appropriately.
- Coordinate with the Buy Force team to provide analytics on growth investments and track ongoing projects.
- Attend meetings as required to support the regional commercial team.
- Collate, drive, and track information related to projects, from new processes to growth initiatives.
- Support additional projects from Regional Commercial leadership to back Group Commercial initiatives.
- Assist in providing information to determine efficient and consistent payment terms for suppliers and customers.
- Monitor adherence to credit terms to maximize working capital.
- Develop methodologies for KPI calculation to monitor regional contribution to the regional trading margin.
- Collaborate with other FP&A Commercial team members to foster continuous improvement regionally and globally.
- Work with the FP&A Operations team to identify interface risks between commercial and operations and optimize the trade-off between operating costs and trading performance.
- Develop and implement methodologies to consistently calculate margin and cost of standardized products across the organization.
- Contribute to global reporting standardisation initiatives, including ERP and BI reporting.
- Undertake ad hoc activities and projects driven by the Regional CCO and Commercial Director.
- Ensure correct usage of SAP S4Hana within the regions so that accounts accurately reflect business performance, and collaborate with shared services to resolve interface issues.
- Assist with annual regional margin budget development by product type, submission, and tracking, as well as quarterly and in-month reforecasts as required.
- Contribute to the development and monitoring of margin contributions from growth projects.
- Support Operations by providing narrative and modelling for CERs with margin implications, and work with Group on Post Completion Reviews with margin implications.
- Provide decision-making support to regional commercial teams through analysis of results, segment returns, evaluation of improvement initiatives, and ad hoc analysis as needed.
- Demonstrate responsibility for compliance with SHECS policies, promote diversity and inclusion, and treat all workers fairly across inter-related teams.
- Support continuous improvement and ensure quality requirements align with the region’s functional strategy.
- Support compliance with all company policies and initiatives across regional functions.
Requirements
- Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline preferred.
- 3+ years of analytical experience, including contributing at a functional leadership table as a peer and leading commercial insights.
- Knowledge of administration of IT systems.
- Advanced Excel and PowerPoint user with strong numerical literacy and willingness to learn finance technologies such as Power BI and its relation to underlying databases.
- Understanding of scrap metal economics.
- High level of business acumen, commercial awareness and ability to apply strategic thinking when analyzing or making recommendations.
