Job Description

River Partners offers a hybrid role based in Sacramento, CA with a flexible alternative work week schedule and a benefits package that includes ample holidays and paid time off, health insurance, and an up to 4% 401(k) match.

This position supports the growth of Heritage Growers (a program of River Partners) by owning core accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance across funds, grants, and farm/program operations. You will work closely with the River Partners Finance team and be co-supervised by the Heritage Growers General Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and bank reconciliations.
  • Produce accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and budget-to-actual analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB 958).
  • Manage financial reporting for restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, internal and external product sales, and capital equipment.
  • Comply with ASC 606 and ASC 842 requirements.
  • Integrate financial data from multiple systems including VantagePoint and Strinos.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and protect the integrity of financial systems.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process with Heritage Growers staff, monitor performance versus budget, and provide variance analysis.
  • Support cash flow forecasting and short-term liquidity management.
  • Track restricted grants and program-specific funding to ensure expenditures align with donor intent.
  • Support grant proposal budgets and required financial reporting, including IRS, USDA, and other applicable nonprofit and agricultural regulations.
  • Oversee invoice preparation and COGS calculations; maintain cost accounting for seed and plant sales and operations.
  • Track and report on inventory inputs, WIP and finished goods, equipment depreciation, and farm-related capital improvements.
  • Serve as inventory systems administrator for Strinos.
  • Coordinate with HG leadership on earned revenue streams and community market operations.
  • Review contracts, grants, and sales orders for compliance, obligations, and credit terms.
  • Supervise accounting operations and develop processes and procedures for daily, monthly, and annual accounting activities.
  • Provide regular financial reporting, including KPI data, to River Partners’ Leadership; work closely with the President, CFO, Director of Finance, Heritage Growers General Manager, Heritage Growers Board Committee, and external auditors.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements and financial software enhancements.
  • Assist farming staff with costing products, contracting and financing for supplies, equipment, purchases, and maintenance charges.
  • Develop a complete understanding of planting, growing, harvesting, cleaning, mixing, and bagging native seed.
  • Support document organization for audit reviews and complete other administrative tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit experience required.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (examples: QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar) and Excel.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Power user of Microsoft Excel and Office; experience with Deltek VantagePoint, MS SharePoint, and Power BI is a plus.
  • Previous experience at a product-based business.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with a team and action-oriented attitude.
  • Systems orientation with a record of improving ERP processes and implementing new systems and workflows.
  • Ability to thrive in an evolving organization by creating and adopting new processes.
  • Understanding of federal or state granting processes and related invoicing and compliance regulations (including GASB).
  • Trusted handling of confidential information and clear communication across the organization.

Position Details

Location: Sacramento, CA (hybrid). A remote location may be considered pending a proposed home office and applicant.

Schedule: typical hours are 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Supervision: Reports to the River Partners Director of Finance, with co-supervision provided by the Heritage Growers General Manager. Supervises one Project Analyst.

Compensation: Exempt position; salary is commensurate with experience. Range: USD 88,000 - 117,000 per year.

Working conditions: Office and farm working conditions, including regular computer use. On occasion, visits to the farm for learning and observation may include standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and exposure to adverse weather or a cleaning mill environment with dust and loud noise. Inventory and office supplies may be lifted or moved regularly.
