Job Description
St. John's United is seeking a senior finance leader to oversee the accounting function across its network of subsidiaries and a foundation. The Director of Accounting and Controller will partner with executive leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, GAAP compliance, and timely insights that support data-driven decisions. This onsite role is based in Billings, Montana, and will guide the Business Office team to deliver precise, timely financial information.
Responsibilities
- Review and approve supplier invoices for payment
- Manage billing operations, cash receipts processing, and revenue reconciliation
- Reconcile intercompany balances
- Review and approve biweekly payroll and quarterly reporting submissions
- Reconcile investment accounts
- Maintain depreciation schedules for fixed assets
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries to the general ledger
- Generate and distribute monthly financial statements in conformance with GAAP
- Perform variance analysis and communicate key drivers to senior leadership
- Coordinate with grant managers to ensure grant compliance and timely expenditure reports
- Collaborate with the CFO, CEO, and leadership to develop and monitor the annual budget
- Develop financial reports, models, and projections for internal and external stakeholders
- Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit, supplying work papers and documentation
- Provide work papers and oversee the preparation of IRS Form 990 with the external accounting firm
- Prepare work papers for Medicare and Medicaid cost reports
- Assist in designing and implementing accounting practices and internal controls that meet audit requirements
- Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of six veteran business office professionals
- Provide financial education and support to department managers on budgeting and interpreting financial statements
- Attend board meetings as needed and collaborate with the CEO, CFO, and Foundation Director on financial presentations
- Participate in Leadership Development Group and special committees as appropriate
- Support the CFO with additional accounting functions as needed
- Assist and support the Payroll Coordinator

- Adhere to safety rules and promptly address hazards or report to supervision
- Follow health and safety policies including TB testing, annual influenza vaccinations, and related protocols
- Stay current on mandatory online training
Requirements
- Confident and experienced in accounting with strong GAAP knowledge, business operations, and financial technologies
- Minimum of five years in accounting, ideally in healthcare or nonprofit environments
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited institution
- Certified Public Accountant or actively pursuing licensure with near completion or eligibility
- Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance reimbursements
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience using financial software; familiarity with PointClickCare, Paylocity, and Fixed Assets CS is a plus
- Highly analytical, meticulous, and exceptionally organized
- Strong interpersonal skills with empathy and a collaborative approach
- Consistent at meeting deadlines and delivering accurate work with reliability
- Supervisory experience with a track record of high performance and staff development
- Commitment to the mission and integrity in leadership
- Understanding of payroll and payroll laws
- Experience with WorkDay HRIS and accounting software preferred
