Controller, Corporate Accounting and Finance

People's Self-Help Housing Corporation seeks an experienced Controller to lead corporate accounting and finance operations. Based in San Luis Obispo, this onsite role oversees financial reporting, cash management, and compliance across grants, programs, and development projects, guiding staff through budgeting, audits, and strategic resource allocation with the executive team.

Responsibilities

• Supervise accounting staff
• Develop and maintain accounting department policies and procedures
• Oversee all corporate bank accounts, manage fund transfers, approve and sign checks
• Manage Construction Draw process to ensure timely and accurate funding for current projects
• Oversee the corporate budget process for the corporation, land projects, rental properties, and grants/contracts
• Maintain reporting schedules to track budget variances and report material variances to the Director of Accounting
• Maintain accurate chart of accounts and general ledger for all grants, programs, development projects, departments, and related entities
• Maintain accurate cash accounts for all related entities and construction activities
• Review and approve payroll registers and related payroll filings; supervise W-2s and 1099s for the corporation and rental properties
• Ensure timely and accurate financial statements for all entities
• Ensure timely compliance reporting related to corporate financial reports
• Assist in preparing the monthly cash flow report to the CFO
• Monitor weekly and monthly cash flow to ensure adequate funding
• Monitor and analyze indirect costs and prepare an indirect cost proposal
• Supervise and maintain internal control systems for the corporate accounting department with the CFO and Director of Accounting & Finance
• Stay current with fiscal regulations and prepare required reports for submittal to applicable agencies
• Review and evaluate accounting software systems and recommend updates
• Coordinate annual corporate audits, including selection of auditors and preparation for audits
• Prepare and file tax returns timely, including payments to the FTB and charitable trust registrations
• Coordinate or assist with renewal of insurance policies annually
• Manage corporate funds to maximize leveraging and earnings in coordination with the CFO and Director
• Attend corporate meetings as directed, including the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and annual meetings
• Pursue seminars and training to update knowledge of accounting systems

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of management experience in a comparable environment
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, Sage or equivalent accounting software
• Bachelor's degree in business or accounting
• Strong data analysis skills with demonstrated results
• Familiarity with Federal GAAP accounting principles
• CPA license preferred
• Valid California driver's license, automobile liability insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle
• Familiarity with nonprofit and cost accounting
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
