Job Description

The Director of Finance at First Presbyterian Church of Houston leads the strategic management of the congregation’s financial operations from an onsite location in Houston, TX. The role supports ministry leaders with informed financial guidance and ensures strong stewardship aligned with the church’s mission. A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting and a minimum of seven years of progressive financial leadership experience are required, with a targeted annual salary of USD 130,000.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement financial strategies that advance the church's mission and long-term viability.
  • Provide guidance to senior leadership and the board on financial planning, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Convert strategic visions into actionable financial plans and resource allocations.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process in collaboration with ministry and operations leaders.
  • Monitor budget performance and deliver regular variance analyses.
  • Prepare rolling forecasts and long-range financial plans.
  • Maintain the integrity of all accounting functions and systems, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Present monthly financial statements to the Finance Committee with variance analysis and narrative context.
  • Develop dashboards and visual summaries that communicate financial health to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit GAAP and applicable laws.
  • Manage annual audits and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets.
  • Oversee tax filings, including 990 where applicable, and regulatory reporting.
  • Monitor cash flow and maintain appropriate reserves.
  • Oversee investment accounts and endowment funds.
  • Ensure proper handling of tithes, offerings, and donations.
  • Lead and develop finance staff and volunteers, fostering a culture of integrity and service.
  • Provide financial training and support to ministry leaders.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, tools, and processes; implement best practices in financial management and reporting.
  • Leverage technology to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA or MBA is optional.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience.
  • Experience in nonprofit, church, or mission-driven organizations strongly preferred.
  • Solid grasp of nonprofit accounting and financial management principles.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High integrity and a committed approach to stewardship.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, adaptable to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate across ministries.
  • Alignment with the church’s mission, values, and ECO Essential Tenets.
  • Servant leadership mindset and a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
