Job Description
Join a mission-driven nonprofit healthcare organization in a part-time, contract role that enables you to shape financial strategy and strengthen long-term sustainability. This onsite position in Durham, NC offers a collaborative, governance-focused environment where your leadership supports partnerships, new service lines, and prudent stewardship of resources. You will work closely with executive leadership and the Board, guiding financial decisions with integrity, while enjoying a flexible schedule and compensation that recognizes your experience.
Responsibilities
- Advise leadership and the Board on financial strategy and organizational sustainability
- Develop multi-year forecasts and strategic plans to support growth and mission delivery
- Establish KPIs, financial dashboards, and performance metrics to track progress
- Support organizational expansion, partnerships, and new service lines
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit, state, and federal financial regulations
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes
- Strengthen internal controls and accounting practices
- Evaluate and improve financial systems and workflows
- Implement accounting practices for Medicare cost reporting compliance and coordinate cost report submissions
- Collaborate with external accounting and consulting partners
- Support initial and partial-year reporting requirements
- Ensure HRSA financial standards compliance
- Support grant budgeting, tracking, and reporting
- Develop systems for restricted funds and grant expenditure tracking
- Assist with Uniform Guidance and federal compliance
- Present financial data to leadership and the Board of Directors
- Translate complex financial information into actionable recommendations
- Participate in governance and strategic planning discussions
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
- 3–5+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Experience as CFO, Controller, Finance Director, or similar role
- Strong background in nonprofit financial management
- Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and internal controls
Preferred Qualifications
- Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) or FQHC Look-Alikes
- Community Health Centers or HRSA-funded organizations
- Medicare cost reporting and reimbursement experience
- HRSA grants and federal compliance knowledge
Additional Preferred Credentials
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- MBA, Master of Accounting, or related graduate degree
- Experience working with nonprofit Boards and Finance Committees
- Healthcare accounting system implementation or optimization experience
Engagement Details
- Schedule: Approximately 10 to 25 hours per week, flexible
- Structure: Fractional executive / contract engagement
