Job Description
The Chief Financial Officer at the New York Association on Independent Living oversees the organization’s financial operations, cash flow management, grant and contract oversight, accounting compliance, and the Finance Department.
Responsibilities
- The CFO reports to the Executive Director and directs the full scope of NYAIL’s finances, including fiscal systems, policies, grant accounts, and compliance functions.
- Lead the Finance Department, which comprises three full‑time staff members.
- Provide strategic leadership for financial operations, guiding policy, oversight, reporting, and the development of systems that support long‑term stability.
- Oversee organizational cash flow, including day‑to‑day management and long‑range cash‑flow projections.
- Supervise deposits, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and ACH or electronic payment processing.
- Manage diverse funding streams from multiple sources, including grants and contracts from NYS DOH and NYS Education Department / ACCES‑VR.
- Oversee preparation of grant vouchers, invoices, and reports for funding agencies, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full compliance.
- Monitor and ensure ongoing MWBE compliance for grants, collaborating with purchasing staff and overseeing timely MWBE reporting to New York State.
- Implement and maintain grant‑related payment systems for subcontractors and vendors.
- Manage subcontractor fiscal processes, including auditing invoices, ensuring proper documentation, and issuing timely vendor payments.
- Oversee reconciliation of all financial accounts, ensuring accuracy and adherence to GAAP.
- Prepare and distribute internal and external financial reports, including Board Reports, contract documents, and ad hoc materials.
- Lead the preparation of agency‑wide and grant‑specific budgets; collaborate with program leadership on budgeting and monitoring.
- Oversee year‑end closeout procedures and coordinate preparation for the annual independent single audit.
- Maintain sound financial and programmatic recordkeeping in line with state, federal, and organizational requirements.
- Supervise Finance Department staff, including the Comptroller, Bookkeeper, and Account Clerk, providing leadership, training, and development.
- Review, update, and implement fiscal policies to promote efficiency, compliance, and best practices in nonprofit financial management.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director on organizational planning, financial strategy, and risk assessment.
- Oversee payroll processing, 401(k) deposits, and related compliance tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Assistant Executive Director.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fiscal management.
- Experience managing finances in a nonprofit setting, including government grants; experience with NYS DOH or NYSED/ACCES‑VR is strongly preferred.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks or similar accounting systems and the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with experience supervising finance staff.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilities.
- Experience directing or contributing to a finance department is preferred.
- Knowledge of Independent Living philosophy and disability rights is preferred.
- Preference for individuals with lived experience with a disability.

Salary and Work Details
- Salary range: USD 140,000 - 150,000 per year
