Job Description

Onsite in Andover, Minnesota, this role provides a stable, locally focused opportunity to manage both finance and human resources for Grace Lutheran Church. You will oversee finance, payroll, office administration, and risk management under the guidance of the Senior Pastor, with a competitive hourly rate of $25 to $35. This position supports a mission-driven organization that values clear processes, stewardship, and collaborative leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and monitor financial reports, budgets, and pledge tracking while maintaining nonprofit GAAP practices for church finances.
  • Supervise the Bookkeeper responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Lead the annual audit with the treasurer to ensure accuracy and prudent stewardship of church funds.
  • Partner with the Senior Pastor to develop and present an annual budget for Vision Board and congregational approval.
  • Advise the Senior Pastor on business and administrative matters affecting the church.
  • Produce monthly financial and administrator reports for Vision Board, Senior Pastor, program staff, Seeds of Grace committees, and related boards.
  • Represent the church in financial, business, and legal transactions as approved by the Vision Board.
  • Oversee the filing of the Parochial Report in coordination with the Administrative Assistant.
  • Manage investments, banking, billing, contracts, loan administration, and payment procedures.
  • Review insurance policies annually to ensure adequate coverage and implement risk management measures, including background checks for all employees and volunteers.
  • Manage business contracts with the Facilities Manager and ensure timely renewals and updated certificates of insurance.
  • Keep database systems current and aligned with the church’s size, financial and operational needs.
  • Assist CYF Director with youth fundraising, event payments, scholarship applications, and invoicing families as needed.
  • Draft or update policies and procedures as part of ongoing governance.
  • Lead quarterly finance meetings with the finance committee.
  • Report contribution statements to donors on an annual and semi-annual basis.
  • Support recruiting, hiring, training, motivating, evaluating, and terminating staff.
  • Serve as a resource on personnel matters including benefits, compensation, contracts, salary plans, workers’ compensation, and wage and labor issues.
  • Process staff background checks and coordinate checks for volunteers, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Supervise Administrative Support Staff, including the Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper.
  • Regularly review the employee handbook and HR policies, proposing improvements to the Personnel Team.
  • Ensure written procedures are documented and followed by staff.
  • Attend Personnel Team meetings as requested.
  • Meet with the Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor on a regular basis to provide administrative updates.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings as needed and serve on committees, with occasional evening work.
  • Engage with community peer network group meetings and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field, plus two years of relevant work experience; supervision experience preferred.
  • Aptitude for computers and office equipment and familiarity with standard software and systems.
  • Agreement with Grace Lutheran Church’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting practices and nonprofit financial reporting; ability to oversee church financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of payroll and benefits administration, current employment laws, and OSHA regulations.
  • Flexibility and strong communication skills, with the ability to work with diverse people in various settings.
  • High organizational ability, accuracy, independence, and proven problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Appreciation for teamwork and individual performance, with the ability to provide clear direction and support for operational goals.

Other

  • Meets with the Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor regularly to update on administrative issues.
  • Participates in internal and external meetings as needed and serves on committees, including occasional evening work.
