Based in Portland, Maine, The Cedars is an award-winning nonprofit focused on senior living and healthcare, delivering compassionate care for more than 96 years. The organization seeks a senior accounting leader to assume Controller-level responsibility for financial reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, and regulatory compliance, partnering closely with the CEO to uphold financial integrity and stewardship. This role directs the accounting function and informs board-level oversight with clarity and rigor.
Responsibilities
- Direct the full scope of accounting operations and financial reporting in collaboration with the CEO
- Manage accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, and billing activities
- Own the month-end, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate statements
- Compile monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) by the 10th day of each month
- Lead operating and capital budgeting with variance analysis and presentation to leadership
- Guarantee accuracy of the general ledger, reconciliations, fixed assets, and overall reporting integrity
- Sustain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and GAAP compliance
- Act as the primary liaison to external auditors and coordinate the annual audit
- Present financial results to the CEO, the Board of Directors, and the Finance Committee
- Monitor cash flow, investments, debt covenants, and insurance reporting
- Ensure compliance with Medicare, MaineCare (Medicaid), Form 990, and cost reporting requirements
- Oversee accounts receivable performance, including delinquency and allowance analyses
- Direct, develop, and evaluate accounting staff across accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
- Prepare financial reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience in healthcare, long-term care, or nonprofit environments
- Controller-level, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Demonstrated experience leading month-end close and audit processes
- Proven supervisory experience over accounting teams (AP, AR, payroll)
- Strong executive communication skills with ability to present to Boards and senior leadership
- Advanced Excel skills and ERP system experience preferred
- Familiarity with Medicare and Medicaid (MaineCare) reporting strongly preferred
